“…Using Karnoversusky and Roots enzymatic staining, Sobkowicz and Emmerling (1989) showed that AChE-positive innervation occurs in outer hair cells between 3 and 7 d after birth in the base and between 7 and 10 d after birth in the apex of mouse cochleas. A similar time course of efferent innervation was also observed by Cole and Robertson (1992) and Merchan-Perez et al (1994) in rat. In vitro horseradish peroxidase labeling in the developing hamster shows that efferent fibers contact OHCs between 6 and 8 d after birth (Simmons et al, 1990).…”

“…In our previous studies of OC neurons in the brainstem, we deduced that ChAT onset occurred first, closely followed by AChE and VAChT (reviewed in Simmons 2002). Weak ChAT immunoreactivity (ChAT-ir) has been observed below IHCs at P0 in the rat cochlea (Merchan-Perez et al 1994); however, these investigators did not look for ChAT-ir earlier in development. Assuming a difference of roughly two days between the gestation periods of mice and rats (approximately 19.5 days for mice and 21.5 days for rats, respectively), a P0 rat should be the equivalent of a P2-P3 mouse.…”

“…The vast majority of investigations of OC development are limited to efferent terminations within the cochlea Merchan-Perez et al 1994;Sobkowicz and Emmerling 1989). Our recent studies in the hamster suggest that choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactivity correlates with the patterns of retrograde and anterograde labeling patterns of OC neurons during development (Simmons et al 1996a(Simmons et al , 1998a.…”
