Choice Experiment Performed on the Fresh Black Slavonian Pig’s Meat: A Preliminary Study

Abstract: Until now, no research has been carried out in Croatia into consumer preferences for a particular agricultural and food product by a choice experiment. Therefore, little data are available about Croatian consumers' preferences for social concerns (sustainability, biodiversity, rural development and animal welfare) with regard to the consumer choice and behavior favoring local pig breeds, in this case the Black Slavonian Pig breed. “…These findings confirm previous research. In a pilot study conducted with a smaller sample (100 Croatian consumers), free-range and semi-indoor production systems were rated positively compared with a conventional pig farming system [ 61 ]. Consumers also preferred a darker red colour of the fresh meat of the Black Slavonian pig labelled with geographical information, such as continental Croatia or continental Croatia + PDO [ 61 ].…”

Krystallis et al [ 62 ] conducted a conjoint analysis to determine the attitudes of European citizens (Belgium, Denmark, Germany and Poland) towards the pig production system.…”

“…Considering that the GDP of the CroSeRo microregion countries is lower, compared to the EU average, the cost price of the product plays an exceptional role. Changes in food consumption behavior and habits due to the pandemic were related to price increase concerns, but also stockpiling, awareness of food waste, safety of and excessive food access concerns, natural/organic food preferences and packaging of foods [57,58]. Respondents rated the aspects of distance, either of stores (M = 2.1) or producers (M = 2.2), as having the least influence on the purchase of food products during the 2020 pandemic.…”

“…This significantly reduces the information asymmetry between producers and consumers and lowers consumers' search costs (Loureiro and Mccluskey, 2000;Aprile et al, 2012). Therefore, there is evidence that consumers' perceptions of product quality and their preferences are influenced by geographical indication labels (Van Ittersum et al, 2007;Rabadán et al, 2021;Milkovic et al, 2023). Geographical indication labels play a crucial role in influencing consumers' purchasing decisions.…”
