Chitin deacetylase family genes in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera: Delphacidae)

Abstract: Chitin deacetylases (CDAs) are enzymes required for one of the pathways of chitin degradation, in which chitosan is produced by the deacetylation of chitin. Bioinformatic investigations with genomic and transcriptomic databases identified four genes encoding CDAs in Nilaparvata lugens (NlCDAs). Phylogenetic analysis showed that insect CDAs were clustered into five major groups. Group I, III and IV CDAs are found in all insect species, whereas the pupa-specific group II and gut-specific group V CDAs are not fou… Show more

“…The N. lugens insects used in this study were obtained from local rice fields at the Huajiachi campus, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, and reared on fresh rice seedlings (Taichung Native 1) under standard laboratory conditions (temperature: 25 ± 1 °C; relative humidity: 60–70%; photoperiod: 16 h/8 h, light/dark), as described previously (Xi et al ., ).…”

“…(), mutation in vermiform ( verm , CDA2 ) in the common fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster leads to elongated and tortuous tracheal tubes (Luschnig et al ., ; Wang et al ., ) and results in disorganized larval cuticle (Gangishetti et al ., ). Moreover, RNAi of CDA2 in the eastern spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Quan et al ., ), the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Xi et al ., ), and the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum (Arakane et al ., ) causes molting failure. Despite these reports, however, current knowledge on the physiological roles of insect CDA2s is rather limited (Yu et al ., ).…”

“…CDAs are broadly conserved, known to occur not only in all fungi (Ruiz‐Herrera & Ortiz‐Castellanos, 2010) but also in insects, where they have a number of developmental roles, including in tracheal development and moulting (Arakane et al . , 2009; Luschnig, Batz, Armbruster, & Krasnow, 2006; Wang, Jayaram, et al, 2006b; Xi, Pan, Ye, Yu, & Zhang, 2014). Considering the relative chemical and physical properties of chitin and chitosan, we hypothesized that chitin deacetylation could also have key roles in fungal development.…”
