Chemokines, chemokine receptors and the gastrointestinal system

Abstract: Core tip: The chemokine network makes an attractive target for therapeutic intervention in many tumor types, including those of the gastrointestinal tract. However, we need to define more selective and specific targets, to minimize systemic side effects during treatment. INTRODUCTION Cancer development and progression in the gastrointestinal tractCancer is a disease in which normal cells acquire genetic and epigenetic abnormalities [1,2] , leading to disorientation of conventional processes for the maintenanc… Show more

“…Thus, lncRNAs may be the local regulators of these coding genes that participate in these activities, and lncRNAs may indirectly promote cancer. Additionally, we detect fibroblast growth factor binding (GO:0017134) and C-X3-C chemokine binding (GO:0019960) molecular functions which are important for both stomach adenocarcinoma and esophageal carcinoma [34,35].…”

“…In vivo the anti-inflammatory effects were shown by inhibition of transcriptions factors like nuclear factor ‘kappa-light-chain-enhancer’ of activated B-cells (NF-κB) and by suppression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) enzymes[ 12 ]. In patients with IBD chemokines and chemokine receptors are increased[ 13 ]. Phytochemicals have been shown to suppress inflammatory signal transduction systems leading to autophagy and apoptosis[ 14 ].…”

“…Squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck are a heterogeneous group of malignancies involving the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx and hypopharynx, and account for >90% of malignant tumors in the oral cavity (29,30). The biological properties of squamous cell carcinoma are intimately regulated by various cytokines and growth factors.…”
