a b s t r a c tA numerical methodology is proposed in this paper to simulate the degradation of cementitious materials under external sulfate attack. The methodology includes diffusion of ions in and out of the structure, chemical reactions which lead to dissolution and precipitation of solids, and mechanical damage accumulation using a continuum damage mechanics approach. Diffusion of ions is assumed to occur under a concentration gradient as well as under a chemical activity gradient. Chemical reactions are assumed to occur under a local equilibrium condition which is considered to be valid for diffusion controlled reaction mechanisms. A macro-scale representation of mechanical damage is used in this model which reflects the cracking state of the structure. The mechanical and diffusion properties are modified at each time step based on the accumulated damage. The model is calibrated and validated using experimental results obtained from the literature. The usefulness of the model in evaluating the mineralogical evolution and mechanical deterioration of the structure is demonstrated.

In this paper, the transformation of solid phase and expansion cracking behaviors due to sulfate attack were evaluated by using RBSM-Truss Network Model. This analysis was constructed by combining a hydration model, a diffusionreaction model, and a crack propagation model in order to evaluate the influence of feedback system of ion transfer through cracks on transformation of solid phase and expansion cracking behavior due to sulfate attack. As a result, the proposed model can predict the change in phase assemblage and physical properties due to hydration process and the change in the transformation of solid phase and the distribution of sulfate ion due to sulfate attack. It was found that expansion crack can affect the diffusion process and expansion cracking behavior as the crack behaves as a buffer of sulfate ion.

SUMMARYIn this paper, a new multiscale-multiphysics computational methodology is devised for the analysis of coupled diffusion-deformation problems. The proposed methodology is based on the variational multiscale principles. The basic premise of the approach is accurate fine-scale representation at a small subdomain where it is known a priori that important physical phenomena are likely to occur. The response within the remainder of the problem domain is idealized on the basis of coarse-scale representation. We apply this idea to evaluate a coupled mechano-diffusion problem that idealizes the response of titanium structures subjected to a thermo-chemo-mechanical environment. The proposed methodology is used to devise a multiscale model in which the transport of oxygen into titanium is modeled as a diffusion process, whereas the mechanical response is idealized using concentration-dependent elasticity equations. A coupled solution strategy based on operator split is formulated to evaluate the coupled multiphysics and multiscale problem. Numerical experiments are conducted to assess the accuracy and computational performance of the proposed methodology. Numerical simulations indicate that the variational multiscale enrichment has reasonable accuracy and is computationally efficient in modeling the coupled mechano-diffusion response.
