Chemistry and Biological Activities of Terpenoids from Copaiba (Copaifera spp.) Oleoresins

Abstract: Copaiba oleoresins are exuded from the trunks of trees of the Copaifera species (Leguminosae-Caesalpinoideae). This oleoresin is a solution of diterpenoids, especially, mono- and di-acids, solubilized by sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. The sesquiterpenes and diterpenes (labdane, clerodane and kaurane skeletons) are different for each Copaifera species and have been linked to several reported biological activities, ranging from anti-tumoral to embriotoxic effects. This review presents all the substances already des… Show more

“…Thus, the results from physicochemical analysis reinforce the fact that it is imperative to include the analysis of copaiba oil which will ensure the quality of commercialized products. On the other hand, the similarity of sample A1 with in natura copaiba oil was confi rmed by GC-MS analysis with α-copaene, β-caryophyllene, Z-α-bergamotene, α-humulene and β-bisabolene (Table 5) being among the main sesquiterpenes of copaiba oleoresins (Leandro et al, 2012). The antimicrobial fi ndings associated to variable quality of samples representing products from Copaifera spp.…”

“…As many structurally diverse antileishmanial compound show activity against amstigotes at 0.06 to 14.00 µmol/L [42]. Maytansine, taxol and the electrophiles block the growth of L. donovani amastigote like form in vitro at low (<1 µmol/L) concentration [43,44] . The activity of methanolic crude extract is similar but their concentration was higher compared to pure compounds.…”

“…Entretanto, os sesquiterpenos têm despertado maior interesse das industrias de perfumaria, farmacêuticas e de cosméticos. De acordo com Leandro et al, 28 esse interesse nos sesquiternos tem elevado o seu valor e o concentrado destes compostos pode chegar a 600 vezes o valor do óleo-resina. Nessa perspectiva, este trabalho propõe a concentração destes compostos por meio da destilação molecular.…”
