Abstract: Abstract KO2 oxidizes the cholestanone (I) to give the lactol (II) [which is ring‐opened on treatment with diazomethane or LiAlH4 to afford the ester (III) and the diol (IV), resp.], whereas oxidation‐methylation of the androstanone (V) under the same conditions leads to the oxo‐esters (VI) and (VII) in equal parts.
