Abstract: Mechanism of the Reaction Between Iodate and Iodide Ions in Acid Solutions (Dushman Reaction).-A detailed stepwise mechanism for the reaction of IO 3 − and I − in acidic solution is given. Nucleophilic attack on the central I V atom accompanied by oxygen protonation leads to the elimination of H 2 O and to the formation of I 2 O 2 as a steady-state intermediate that reacts with I − to form I 2 and IO 2 − . Subsequent reactions of IO 2 − with H + and I − are rapid.
