Chemically modified xanthan and gellan for preparation of biomaterials for ophthalmic applications

Abstract: Gellan and xanthan are extracellular polysaccharides with very interesting rheological or gelling properties. They are esterified with acrylic acid, acryloyl chloride or maleic anhydride. Consequently, due to the presence of carbon double bonds, hydrogels are obtained using a grafting-crosslinking process with N-isopropylacrylamide and N ′-bisacrylamide. Such hydrogels, due to the presence of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), are thermosensitive and present drug release properties which can be adjusted through the … Show more

“…The study evidently confirms the increase in stability of xanthan gum in different phase. Formation of inter penetrating networks was found to be the reason for improved mechanical strength and ultimately contributing to the stability of formulation (Hamcerencu et al, 2019;Kulkarni et al, 2019).…”

“…This substitution of hydroxyl group is known as etherification and is basically the process of dehydration of hydroxyl group when polysaccharide reacted with carboxymethyl group. For the customization of the release profile and enhance the mucoadhessive property of the xanthan gum, carboxymethylation is done (Hamcerencu, Popa, Riess & Desbrieres, 2019).…”

“…Xanthan gum is a negatively charged polysaccharide with interesting rheological and gelling characteristics, and it was proposed for ophthalmic applications such as sustained drug release [133,134]. This polymer is also used as an additive to increase the drug release time in comparison to conventional eye drops [135].…”

“…Stiff polysaccharides are of particular interest, since they can form networks with rather high viscoelasticity at very low polymer concentrations (around 0.05-0.1%) [6]. Due to this, they are widely used as thickeners in various industrial applications, e.g., in the production of consumer goods and food industry [7,8], materials for biomedical applications [9,10] etc. Their distinct application is the preparation of fracturing fluids for oil industry [11].…”
