Chemical pressure in SmNiC2−xBxcompounds: evidence of a quantum critical behavior

Abstract: We studied the effect of carbon substituted by boron on polycrystalline samples of SmNiC(2) in the B content range 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.200. The structural parameters were determined from x-ray measurements by Rietveld analysis. The structural analysis shows that the cell volume increases as the B content increases indicating that the substitution produces an internal pressure. The samples were studied by resistance as a function of temperature from room temperature down to 2 K. The transition temperature of the charge d… Show more

“…The difference between them is likely associated with a weakening of the AFM interactions and an increase of spin disorder. This behavior differs from the results obtained for Sm 1−x La x NiC 2 41 , and SmNiC 2−x B x 40 , where weak doping initially causes a slight increase of Curie temperature T C followed by more abrupt suppression of FM for higher doping rates.…”

“…The blue color represents the region in which CDW is observed with the Peierls temperature gradually suppressed from T CDW = 121 K for NdNiC 2 with increasing of the La concentration. T CDW (x) is succesfuly described by mean-field power law function characterizing the influence of chem-ical pressure 40,64,65 :…”

“…Recently B-doped SmNiC 2 reported a similar increase in T C from 17.5 K to 23.1 K until the CDW is present32. Once a CDW is suppressed in Sm 1−x La x NiC 2 , however, the Curie temperature starts to decrease and is suppressed down to 2.5 K at x  = 0.86.…”

“…The family of NC carbides RNiC 2 (where R is a rareearth element) is studied intensively. The many nontrivial phenomena have been observed in them, such as quantum critical behavior, interplay of charge density wave (CDW), magnetism, and unconventional superconductivity [30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38]. The compounds with R = Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures [39,40].…”
