The extensive application of synthetic insecticides and herbicides over the past 50 years has led to a number of problems, including negative effects on non-target organisms and the evolution of pesticide-resistant pests. As an alternative means of pest control, plant-based biopesticides have emerged. While developing a new bioinsecticide, allelopathy on both target pests and target crops must be evaluated. We evaluated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), total phenolic content (TPC), total sugars and antiradical activity (ARA), as well as 18 photosynthetic apparatus characterizing functional parameters as stress signaling response to aqueous caraway seed distillation by-product-based extracts. VOCs were detected by headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS). The caraway extract application decreased “green leaf volatile” C4, C5 and C6 alcohol content in the cucumber leaves. Total phenolic content (TPC), total sugars and antiradical activity (ARA) using high-throughput 96-well plate spectrophotometric methods were tested in dried leaves. No significant changes in these parameters were detected in cucumber leaves after the application of extracts. The caraway extract application did not cause changes in the functioning of the photosynthesis apparatus. Aqueous caraway seed distillation by-product-based extracts can be considered non-phytotoxic to cucumber plants; however, they modify the VOC emissions even ten days after treatment.

This work investigates olive pomace from olive mill factories as an adsorbent for the removal of total phenols from olive mill effluent (OME). This pathway of valorization of olive pomace reduces the environmental impact of OME while providing a sustainable and cost-effective wastewater treatment approach for the olive oil industry. Olive pomace was pretreated with water washing, drying (60 °C) and sieving (<2 mm) to obtain the raw olive pomace (OPR) adsorbent material. Olive pomace biochar (OPB) was obtained via carbonization of OPR at 450 °C in a muffle furnace. The adsorbent materials OPR and OPB were characterized using several basic analyzes (Scanning Electron Microscopy–Energy-Dispersive X-ray SEM/EDX, X-ray Diffraction XRD, thermal analysis DTA and TGA, Fourier transform infrared FTIR and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller surface BET). The materials were subsequently tested in a series of experimental tests to optimize the sorption of polyphenols from OME, investigating the effects of pH and adsorbent dose. Adsorption kinetics showed good correlation with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as Langmuir isotherms. Maximum adsorption capacities amounted to 21.27 mg·g−1 for OPR and 66.67 mg·g−1 for OPB, respectively. Thermodynamic simulations indicated spontaneous and exothermic reaction. The rates of total phenol removal were within the range of 10–90% following 24 h batch adsorption in OME diluted at 100 mg/L total phenols, with the highest removal rates observed at pH = 10. Furthermore, solvent regeneration with 70% ethanol solution yielded partial regeneration of OPR at 14% and of OPB at 45% following the adsorption, implying a significant rate of recovery of phenols in the solvent. The results of this study suggest that adsorbents derived from olive pomace may be used as economical materials for the treatment and potential capture of total phenols from OME, also suggesting potential further applications for pollutants in industrial wastewaters, which can have significant implications in the field of environmental technologies.

Objective: The aim of this work was to evaluate the acaricidal potential of the passion fruit seed extract (Passiflora edulis) in controlling the red palm mite (R. indica). Theoretical framework: Raoiella indica is a pest mite of agricultural interest, considered one of the main pests of banana, coconut, date palm, and ornamental crops. Method: The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design using passion fruit seed extract, with 7 repetitions and 12 R. indica individuals per repetition. The concentration tested was 1.0; 1.72; 2.95; 5.08; 8.73, and 15.0 %. The experimental units consisted of coconut leaf discs (4 cm in diameter) with moist cotton at the bottom of the Petri dish (10.0 x 1.2 cm) and around the disc to maintain turgidity and prevent the mites from escaping. The application was carried out using an airbrush, connected to a compressor calibrated with a constant pressure of 1.3 psi and 1 mL of solution per plate. The evaluation was conducted at intervals of 24, 48, and 72 hours following the extract's spraying. Results and discussion: Mortality was observed in the dose-response model, the concentration of 15 % showed mortality rates greater than 98.8 % of individuals. Amounts of phenolics of 10.242, tannins of 14.837, and flavonoids of 9.700 in mg g-1 were found, attributing the mortality of individuals to the presence of these compounds. It was concluded that the passion fruit seed extract has an acaricidal effect on R. indica in the laboratory. Implications of the research: Alternative pest management has grown substantially in recent years, given the demand for more sustainable products in the agricultural field. The use of botanical extracts is beneficial to the environment, as it does not promote soil and water contamination and can be an efficient method for controlling agricultural pests. Originality/value: This article adds value to research areas such as alternative management of agricultural pests, and sustainability and suggests a change in the environmentally conscious behavior of rural producers.
