Chemical Composition and Ruminal Dry Matter and Crude Protein Degradability of Spineless Cactus

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine ruminal degradability of the dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) of 10 varieties of spineless cactus (Opuntia spp.) grown in north-eastern Brazil. Two ruminally fistulated steers were used in a randomized complete block design. Ash, CP, acid detergent fiber, and acid detergent lignin levels ranged from 10.4 to 13.3 %, 6.2-7.7 %, 19.8-24.8 % and 3.4-5.4 %, respectively. Relative to the other cactus varieties, Redonda had the highest (P < 0.05) in situ soluble DM f… Show more

“…NDF and ADF) and in vitro digestibility of spineless cactus are functions of maturation stage and are in agreement with Repetto et al (2003). In this regard, Batista et al (2003) stated that IVDMD of spineless cactus could be similar or higher than that of conventional forages such as lucerne. Therefore, the kinetic variables of its IVDMD suggest that spineless cactus could be good forage to ruminants.…”

“…The cladodes of spiny and spineless cactus pears are used as feed for livestock during the frequent periods of food shortages or droughts in many arid and semi-arid regions (De Kock & Aucamp, 1970;Felker, 1995;Pretorius et al, 1997;Ben Salem et al, 2002;Tegegne, 2002b;Batista et al, 2003). Spineless cactus pears are valued by many farmers because of their drought resistance, high biomass yield, palatability and adaptability to a range of soils and climatic regions (Ben Salem et al, 1996;Batista et al, 2003).…”
