Abstract: Charles Lum (Chuck) Drake, professor emeritus at Dartmouth College, president of AGU from 1984 to 1986, and surely one of the best known and most influential leaders of modern Earth science, passed away at his home in Norwich, Vermont, on July 8, 1997, a sudden victim of heart failure while working in his barn. “His overall contribution to Earth science was greater than that of anyone,” said one prominent scientist, aptly and succinctly describing Chuck's career as many of his colleagues might have done.
