Characterizing Multimorbidity from Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) often live with and develop multiple co-occurring conditions, namely multimorbidity, with diffuse impacts on clinical care and patient quality of life. However, literature characterizing T2DM-related multimorbidity patterns is limited. This review summarizes the findings from the emerging literature characterizing and quantifying the association of T2DM with multimorbidity clusters. The authors’ findings reveal 3 dominant cluster types appearing in patients with T2… Show more

“…The use of cluster analysis allows a better characterization of multimorbidity patterns by identifying subsets of the T2DM population that may need different demands from the health system [ 7 ], but also it can provide an understanding of potential etiologies that are related to T2DM morbidity. In this line, T2DM cases with obesity may imply recent diagnosis which could require a different management (i.e., number and type of medications, number of control visits, etc.)…”

“…T2DM is a chronic condition which is often found with other chronic diseases even among younger subjects [ 7 , 8 ]. The presence of two or more chronic conditions in the same individual is known as multimorbidity, and the current evidence shows that multimorbidity is more common among people with T2DM, amongst whom the prevalence of multimorbidity may range between 30% to almost 90% [ 9 , 10 , 11 ].…”

“…Patients with diabetes are at high risk of living with multiple co-occurring conditions, such as dyslipidemia, cardiovascular-related disease, microvascular complications, depression [3,4], as well as an increased risk for dementia. Similar to diabetes, prediabetes can also cause multiple systemic damage.…”
