Characterizing groundwater flow and heat transport in fractured rock using fiber‐optic distributed temperature sensing

Abstract: [1] We show how fully distributed space-time measurements with Fiber-Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing (FO-DTS) can be used to investigate groundwater flow and heat transport in fractured media. Heat injection experiments are combined with temperature measurements along fiber-optic cables installed in boreholes. Thermal dilution tests are shown to enable detection of cross-flowing fractures and quantification of the cross flow rate. A cross borehole thermal tracer test is then analyzed to identify fracture… Show more

“…Large screened intervals enabled them to use vertical temperature profiles as an indicator of vertical heterogeneity in the aquifer and of inflows from fractures and porous media. Read et al [131] performed heat transport tests in fractured media using DTS for temperature monitoring in injection and pumping wells. They monitored thermal dilution tests to detect cross-flowing fractures and assess the cross flow rate.…”

“…Mostly hot water is infiltrated in an injection well, and BTCs are recorded in one or more downstream observation well (Ma et al, 2012;Macfarlane et al, 2002;Palmer et al, 1992;Read et al, 2013;Wagner et al, 2014;Wildemeersch et al, 2014). Insight into aquifer heterogeneity is not well constrained by analysis of thermal signals introduced and measured over long screens.…”
