“…This slope is close to the expected relationship for weathering of Na-silicates to kaolinite (Drever, 1997) and similar to the relationship between Si and Na + observed in the lower Tsangpo-Brahmaputra by Singh et al (2005). Although the presence of kaolinite is typically indicative of deep weathering environments and might not be expected to form in the cold continental climate of the southern Tibetan plateau, the clay mineralogy of soils across an elevational gradient from 3700 to >4600 m in the Yarlung Tsangpo valley is dominated by micas, kaolinite, and lesser quantities of vermiculite (Smith et al, 1999).
