Characterization of Narrowband Noise and Channel Capacity for Powerline Communication in France

Abstract: Narrowband powerline communication (NB-PLC) systems represent a key step for the real development of smart grids’ applications in the medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) networks. This article sums up the results of a complete experimental measurement campaign aimed at investigating the low voltage NB-PLC channel in the frequency range from 9 to 500 kHz in various sites (i.e., rural, urban etc.) located in France. The noise features in time-frequency representation are studied at five different sites betw… Show more

“…Inspecting the raw data prior to filtering, 2 errors are located for this stream (c). A total BER of 0.003 % was noted, a fraction of the minimum accepted 10 -4 rate defined by the G3 Alliance [41]. This rate is similar to configuration 1, although more significant bits were corrupted, leading to larger variations in apparent temperature reading.…”

“…One such challenge is the intelligent management of electricity at all levels, from production to final consumption [1,2]. Distribution efficiency and the reliability of service delivery are two indicators that can be used to evaluate the performance of distribution systems [3,4]. The increasing deployment of smart grids has improved their monitoring and controllability [5].…”

“…Measurement campaigns have also enabled the stochastic modeling of PLC channels [16]- [19], in order to understand the characteristics of the noise sources. In [18], regression and noise decomposition algorithms designed in [20] are applied to narrowband and broadband noise level measurements in low voltage (≤ 0.4 kV) power networks.…”
