1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) was selected as co-solvent to dissolve cellulose and silk fibroin and the cellulose/silk fibroin blend fibers were fabricated with dry-jet wet spinning technology. The phase morphology of cellulose and silk fibroin in the blend fibers was studied by scanning electron microcopy and laser scanning confocal microscope. It is shown that the cellulose is in the continuous phase and silk fibroin exists as ''fibril-like'' in cellulose, in which the radial dimension of silk fibroin phase is 0.5-1.0 lm. The phase size of silk fibroin along the fiber axis increased with the increase of silk fibroin content and draw ratio. From the wideangle X-ray scattering, it is found that the total crystallinity of the blend fibers decreased with increasing silk fibroin content. The hydrogen bond between cellulose and silk fibroin was observed from Fourier transform infrared spectra. Although the tensile strength and initial modulus of blend fibers decreased with increasing silk fibroin content, the tensile strength of blend fibers contain 35 wt% silk fibroin was up to 191 MPa.

The effect of two types of cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose and paper pulp, on enzymatic hydrolysis for cellobiose production was investigated. The particle size, the relative crystallinity index and the water retention value were determined for both celluloses. A previously studied multistage hydrolysis process that proved to enhance the cellobiose production was studied with both types of celluloses. The cellobiose yield exhibited a significant improvement (120% for the microcrystalline cellulose and 75% for the paper pulp) with the multistage hydrolysis process compared to continuous hydrolysis. The conversion of cellulose to cellobiose was greater for the microcrystalline cellulose than for the paper pulp. Even with high crystallinity, microcrystalline cellulose achieved the highest cellobiose yield probably due to its highest specific surface area accessible to enzymes and quantity of adsorbed protein.

This paper investigated the supramolecular properties and accessibility of fibres regenerated from cotton-based waste garments and compared to typical lyocell fibres.The supramolecular and accessibility properties of the cotton-based waste garments fibres regenerated from three sources (waste denim garments, easy care finished cotton fabrics and a blend of cotton-based waste garment with wood pulp) were analyzed and compared to the lyocell fibres. The Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and Wide Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD) analyses indicated that the fibres from cotton waste garments had supramolecular properties similar to the typical lyocell fibres. The exception was spun from the cotton pulp reclaimed from easy care treated cotton fabrics and maybe related to increased amorphous cellulose content in its structure. The fibre's accessibility by reagents behaviour correlated well with the supramolecular properties. The results indicate that the waste garment purification process may affect the properties of the pulp and hence the supramolecular properties of the resultant fibres. Further research on the purification and regeneration of fibres from waste garments may lead to the use of cotton waste garments as an alternative feedstock source to the lyocell process.
