Characterization of Alzheimer’s Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults in Panama

Abstract: Research on age-related cognitive impairment is scarce in Central America. We report factors associated with cognitive impairment among a sample of older adults in Panama diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD, n = 31), mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n = 43), or no cognitive impairment (controls, n = 185). Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotype was assessed in a subset of cases (n = 135). Age (OR = 2.53, 95% CI = 1.03-6.17) and ApoE ɛ4 (OR = 5.14, 95% CI = 2.11-12.52) were significantly related to cognitive impairm… Show more

“…This is one of our most relevant results concerning cognitive impairment and other age-related conditions. [6] Notably, 32.6% of participants tested (n = 267) had at least one copy of APOE4. Table 2 summarizes the distribution of APOE genotypes by age group.…”

“…Among the cognitive, physical function and depression variables, participants aged ≥85 years scored lower on cognitive tests, and had more BADL and IADL limitations and depressive symptoms. [4,7] For Panama, PARI provided the fi rst data regarding health-related factors in older adults, a line of research that has been active in most high-income countries for decades. In the initial cohort, we collected information on a wide range of variables and reported age-related impairments in cognition and everyday function, many of which were expected based on the international literature.…”

“…La prevalencia de este alelo es aproximadamente del 15% en la población general y en las personas con EA es de un 40% (Bendlin et al, 2010). En Panamá, una investigación señaló que el 57% de los sujetos con EA esporádica y 50% de los sujetos con DCL tenían una o dos copias de ApoEε4 (Villareal et al, 2016). Este hallazgo sugiere que la genotipificación de APOEε4 puede complementar el diagnóstico de la EA en Panamá.…”
