Abstract: The world is in need of more eco-friendly material, therefore researchers around the globe focus on developing new materials that would improve the environmental quality of products. This need for new green materials has led to the utilization of composites made from raw natural fibers and polymer matrices, and this has become one of the most widely investigated research topics in recent times. Natural fiber composites are an alternative for replacing environmentally harmful synthetic materials and help contro… Show more

“…Three main classifications of natural fibers are present namely mineralbased, animal-based and plant-based [2]. Generally plant-based natural fibers are extracted from the stem, root, and leaves [3]. The strength of the natural fibers is also dependent on the part from which it is extracted and environmental conditions of growth which in turn design the chemical constituents and fiber dimensions [4].…”

“…The FTIR spectrum for the FUNaOH sample showed that the hemicellulose and part of the lignin were removed with the alkaline treatment, since the bands at 1738 and 1236 cm −1 were not observed, and the spectral region of 1550 at 1300 cm −1 decreased in intensity. These changes are related to the fact that hemicellulose is soluble even at low concentrations of alkalis, causing it to be partially or totally removed from the fiber, thus confirming the chemical modification . After the alkaline treatment, the band of the hydroxyl region decreased.…”

“…These renewable natural fibers have the potential to replace conventional synthetic fibers in various applications, including semistructural automotive components, such as backseats, door inserts, underbody panels, instrument panels, construction, and packaging industry . Due to growing concern with environmental issues, natural fibers have received special attention as a reinforcing load in the polymer matrix, because they have a low cost, come from renewable sources, are readily available and are also biodegradable.…”

“…Natural fibers extracted from various renewable sources are finding prominent role as an alternate to synthetic fiber reinforced polymer composites. The extracted natural fibers as reinforcement with polymer matrix offers more advantages such as reduced density of the products, excellent specific strength and high modulus and also biodegradable [1]. The main drawbacks of natural fibers extracted from renewable sources to be used as reinforcement with polymer matrix are poor dimensional stability and very poor interfacial bonding which is due to hydrophilic tendency of the natural fiber.…”
