Objective:To describe the phenomenon of child neglect and understand it in a gender context. Method: Retrospective, quantitative, and exploratory study that analyzed reports of violence by a child and adolescent protection network in a Brazilian city. The theoretical and methodological basis applied was TIPESC (Theory of Nursing Praxical Intervention in Collective Health), with a gender emphasis. Results: Neglect of children under the age of ten represents more than half the reports received over all the years studied; more boys than girls suffered neglect and 41.4% of the reports of neglect involved children under than age of three; women were identified as being solely responsible in 67.9%, and as accessories in 17.3% of the incidents reported. Conclusion: Child neglect is a complex matter, the gender subordinate status inflicted on these children and their mothers who are responsible for their care underscore the social vulnerability of this group. DESCRIPTORS INTRODUCTIONBrazil has legal provisions protecting children and adolescents from all varieties of violence, including neglect. Among many other requirements, the 1988 Federal Brazilian Constitution most particularly governs rules on citizenship and personal dignity in order to promote the wellbeing of all, with no discrimination or age limit. Its text on the rights of citizens guarantees "education, health, nourishment, work, home, leisure, security, social security, maternity and child protection, and aid for the unprotected" (1) . Brazilian public policy relating to children and adolescents is protective and promotes healthy growth and development. The Child and Adolescent Statute, enacted in 1990, establishes that children and adolescents are entitled to all inherent human rights and must be guaranteed the means for their full development. Anyone who inflicts neglect upon, or any other offense against, the integrity of, children and adolescents, shall be penalized for such act or omission (2) . Brazil's National Policy for Morbidity and Mortality through Accident or Violence confers a material role upon the health sector to deal with these offenses, without prejudice to the liability of other sectors of society, and recommends joint action with a number of different social sectors (3) . In 2001, the city of Curitiba, capital of the State of Paraná, criated the Network for the Protection of Children and Adolescents at Risk of Violence. The network's regulations (4) , drawn up in 2004, established the types and nature of acts of violence against children and adolescents susceptible to confinement in municipal institutions. RESUMENObjetivo: Analizar la violencia contra los adolescentes a la luz de las categorías de género y generación. Método: Estudio exploratorio, descriptivo, de abordaje cuantitativo y cualitativo que. Las fuentes de datos fueron las denuncias de violencia mantenidos por la Red de Protección en Curitiba entre los años 2010-2012 y entrevistas semi-estructuradas con 16 adolescentes alojados. Las variables cuantitativas se analizaron mediante el programa SPSS y los cualitativos por la análisis de contenido. Resultados: Los adolescentes fueron sometidos a la violencia en el hogar y en el exterior, como víctimas o espectadores. La violencia fue más frecuente en el hogar, centrándose principalmente en las chicas con matices marcados de violencia de gé-nero. Conclusión: Más que encontrar la magnitud del problema, el estudio puede servir de base para calificar la asistencia a las personas víctimas de este fenómeno. DESCRIPTORES ABSTRACTExploratory and descriptive study based on quantitative and qualitative methods that analyze the phenomenon of violence against adolescents based on gender and generational categories. The data source was reports of violence from the Curitiba Protection Network from 2010 to 2012 and semi-structured interviews with 16 sheltered adolescents. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS software version 20.0 and the qualitative data were subjected to content analysis. The adolescents were victims of violence in the household and outside of the family environment, as victims or viewers of violence. The violence was experienced at home, mostly toward girls, with marked overtones of gender violence. More than indicating the magnitude of the issue, this study can give information to help qualify the assistance given to victimized people and address how to face this issue.

O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar o conhecimento e a conduta dos cirurgiões-dentistas de Guarabira-PB frente a situações de maus-tratos infantis. Realizou-se um estudo transversal, no qual foram entrevistados 18 profissionais e os resultados foram apresentados por meio da estatística descritiva. Ao longo da atividade laboral, doze cirurgiões-dentistas relataram ter atendido pacientes vítimas de violência, com 91,7% dos casos originados no próprio núcleo familiar. O sexo feminino (50,0%) foi o mais acometido e a cabeça (27,3%) a região mais envolvida. Diante dos casos de maus-tratos, a principal conduta adotada foi a conversa com os pais/responsáveis (83,3%). Apesar de reconhecer a obrigatoriedade da denúncia dos casos, a principal conduta adotada foi apenas o diálogo com os pais ou responsáveis. A cross-sectional study was conducted, in which 18 professionals were interviewed, and the results were presented through descriptive statistics. 12 dental surgeons related to have attended patients who were victims of violence, being that in 91.7% of cases the aggressor was a member of the family of the victim. Most victims were female (50.0%) and the head (27.3%) was the most affected region. Considering the cases of abuse, the main course of action taken by the participants was the dialog with parents/guardians (83.3%). Although they recognize that denouncing such cases is mandatory, most of them did nothing apart from such a conversation.
