Characteristics of Mild Cognitive Impairment Using the Thai Version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease Tests: A Multivariate and Machine Learning Study

Abstract: Background: The Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD) developed a neuropsychological battery (CERAD-NP) to screen patients with Alzheimer’s dementia. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has received attention as a pre-dementia stage. Objectives: To delineate the CERAD-NP features of MCI and their clinical utility to externally validate MCI diagnosis. Methods: The study included 60 patients with MCI, diagnosed using the Clinical Dementia Rating, and 63 normal controls. Data were analyse… Show more

“…Secondly, our interventional study was performed on women only, and therefore a follow-up study should be performed to examine the effects of NFT in elderly healthy males and males with aMCI. Thirdly, it would have been even more interesting if we had used more cognitive tests, for example, using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for AD tests to probe semantic and episodic memory, and word recall and recognition 55. The strengths of this study are that we examined the efficacy of NFT in a large study sample and compared NFT with CAU and exergame and adjusted for possible effects of age and education.…”

“…25 The Thai version of the MoCA test was translated from English to Thai language, and was validated in Thai population. 26,27 TMT was used to assess a variety of cognitive processes, including attention, visual search and scanning, sequencing and shifting, psychomotor speed, abstraction, flexibility, ability to execute and modify a plan of action, and ability to maintain two trains of thought simultaneously. 28 Each participant was asked to draw lines to connect circled numbers and letters in an alternating numeric and alphabetic sequence (ie, 1-A-2-B, etc.)…”

“…A further development of this battery will lead to identify the combinations of tests and test items that most reliably and accurately classify patients based on neuropsychological/linguistic features. The use of machine learning algorithms, as reported by several other studies, may represent a useful approach to this aim [e.g., [24][25][26], when a sufficiently large dataset allowing to identify which test/test item leads to the best discrimination of deficits in each variant will become available.…”
