This study investigated the prevalence of transformative experiences, antecedents of transformative experience, and the relation between transformative experience and deep-level learning (conceptual change and transfer) for high school biology students (N = 166). Results suggested that the high school students in our sample typically engaged in low levels of transformative experience with respect to biology, but those students who strongly identified with science and who endorsed a mastery goal orientation were more likely to report engagement in higher levels of transformative experience. Furthermore, a higher level of engagement in transformative experience was positively associated with (a) conceptual change in understanding the concept of natural selection, but not inheritance, at the post-and follow-up assessments and (b) transfer at the follow-up assessment. According to Jackson (1986), there are two enduring outlooks in education, the mimetic, which focuses on transmitting predetermined and measurable information to students, and the transformative, which focuses on the transformation of qualities such as values, attitudes, and perceptions. El objetivo de este ensayo es destacar cómo las creencias de los maestros tienen una influencia en la manera en cómo estos enseñan, así como la importancia de considerarlas en su formación y desarrollo profesional; de igual forma, se subraya que maestros y administradores escolares tienen sus propios sistemas de construcción y reestructuración de creencias y, por lo tanto, pueden ser co-creadores de sus procesos de aprendizaje y cambio organizacional. La manera en la que los docentes interpretan la enseñanza a partir de sus creencias tiene grandes implicaciones para reconocer la necesidad de propiciar experiencias significativas y espacios de reflexión, si se quiere favorecer su desarrollo profesional. Se revisó literatura que menciona estas creencias, entendidas como conocimientos útiles que guían su práctica, lo cual constituye una valiosa oportunidad para comprenderla y transformarla. Además, se analiza cómo la gestión del conocimiento organizacional puede convertirse en estrategia que logre enriquecer el desarrollo profesional de los maestros, de la enseñanza y de la escuela como espacio de aprendizaje. The role of students’ prior topic beliefs in recall and evaluation of information from texts on socio-scientific issues

In this research, we investigated relationships between undergraduate students' prior topic beliefs and their recall of the main conclusions from texts on controversial socio-scientific issues, to what extent students trusted the recalled conclusions, and how they justified their trust in those conclusions. While belief-biased recall of text conclusions was not observed in this study, students were found to trust the recalled conclusions more when they were consistent than when they were inconsistent with students' prior beliefs about the issues.Moreover, students primarily justified their trust in the recalled conclusions by referring to their personal opinions on the issues. Finally, students who correctly recalled text conclusions even when those conclusions were at odds with their prior beliefs about the issues outperformed students who incorrectly recalled conclusions that were consistent with their prior beliefs on measures of cognitive reflection and reported use of critical reading strategies.Theoretical as well as educational implications of these findings are discussed.
