Changes in body image satisfaction during pregnancy: A comparison of high exercising and low exercising women

Abstract: The findings suggest that women are able to assimilate the bodily changes of pregnancy without a negative shift in BIS. However, women who exercise during pregnancy may respond more favourably to changes in their bodies at early pregnancy compared to women who remain sedentary.

“…Por estes possíveis efeitos, o controle e administração do estresse se fazem necessários, consistindo a prática de atividades físicas um importante aliado (ARTAL; WISWELL; DRINKWATER, 1999;GOODWIN;ASTBURY;MCMEEKEN, 2000;GREENBERG, 2002;BOSCAGLIA;SKOUTERIS;WERTHEIM, 2003;BATISTA et al, 2003).…”

“…Given past research indicating that exercise is positively associated with body satisfaction during pregnancy (Boscaglia et al, 2003;Goodwin et al, 2000;Prather et al, 2012;Symons Downs et al, 2008), it is somewhat surprising that physical activity habit strength did not protect women against declines in body satisfaction. This may be because the current sample exhibited a restricted range of physical activity habit strength, which may have decreased the chances of detecting an association between physical activity habit strength and body satisfaction.…”

“…Several studies indicate that regular exercise and positive dietary behaviours are related to body satisfaction in pregnant women (Boscaglia, Skouteris, & Wertheim, 2003;Crow, Agras, Crosby, Halmi & Mitchell, 2008;Goodwin, Astbury, & McKeeken, 2000;Prather, Spitznagle, & Hunt, 2012). Repetition of health behaviours is particularly important, as it forms the basis of habits, which can be defined as "learned sequences of acts that have become automatic" (Verplanken & Aarts, 1999, p. 104).…”

“…This change not only may be seen in conditions such as skin diseases, fatness, burnings, and alopecia, but also it is inevitable in changes arising from puberty, aging, pregnancy, and menstruation period. The most noticeable alterations in pregnancy are gaining weight and body deformation, i.e., growing belly, breasts heaviness and tenderness, skin changes such as chloasma, spider telangiectasia, varicose veins, and stretch marks (7). Being concerned about continuation of inappropriate pregnancy changes after delivery is one of the most important concerns among pregnant women (6).…”
