Challenges with up-scaling dry sanitation technologies

Abstract: The acceleration of sanitation delivery towards meeting the South African Government's target of completely eradicating the existing backlogs by 2010, has led to a surge of activities. As part of its strategy for ensuring that basic sanitation is provided, the policy has recommended that a ventilated improved pit latrine (VIP) is considered as the basic minimum requirement in the form of a sanitation technology. The up-scaling and delivering of sanitation in many cases in the form of VIPs and its derivatives, … Show more

“…Pits should be dug as deep as possible withinthe constraints of the high water table but not more than a man’s height considering worker’s safety. As the manual emptier must enter into the pit, health risks increase when pits are deeper than 1.5 m, [28, 29], where low oxygen and toxic gases such as ammonia and methane may be present. In addition, glass and metal pieces in the sludge can cause cuts [30].…”

“…11). The optimal pH for biological activity is between 6.5 and 8, as anaerobic microorganisms, especially methanogens, exhibit a characteristic sensitivity to the extremes of pH (Bhagwan et al, 2008) (Anderson et al, 2003. Faecal pH is neutral with a median value of pH 6.64 and a range of pH 5.3−7.5 (Rose et al, 2015), while urine has a pH of 9.0-9.3 due to urea dissociation by bacterial enzymes after secretion (Jonsson and Vinneras, 2007).…”

“…By the time the eThekwini Municipality changed its policy to offer only UDDTs, more than 45 000 VIPs were in existence in the municipality. A serious concern was that pit latrines ceased to provide a sanitation solution when the pits were full, and this was occurring more rapidly than expected (Bhagwan et al, 2008). Emptying is undertaken by the municipality, at no cost to the users.…”
