Challenges in Bridge Health Monitoring: A Review

Abstract: Bridge health monitoring is increasingly relevant for the maintenance of existing structures or new structures with innovative concepts that require validation of design predictions. In the United States there are more than 600,000 highway bridges. Nearly half of them (46.4%) are rated as fair while about 1 out of 13 (7.6%) is rated in poor condition. As such, the United States is one of those countries in which bridge health monitoring systems are installed in order to complement conventional periodic nondest… Show more

“…AVTs have been widely used worldwide, taking advantage of freely available ambient excitation sources, such as wind and traffic loads. The scientific literature has commonly reported the lack of sufficient input energy to excite structural modes of interest, and a longer sensing duration requires careful consideration in selecting the sensing system related to the number of sensors, power, board memory, and data transmission [ 7 ].…”

“…Emerging wireless sensor technologies still need to address existing limitations, such as drift phenomenon, communication bandwidth, data loss, time synchronization, and signal length. Therefore, conventional wired systems are still widely used [ 7 ]. In this framework, VIT is becoming an attractive option to overcome the limitations of AVT and FVT because field implementation is a relatively straightforward process.…”

“…To observe and control them, dynamic SHM Systems are required [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Structural system identification is a critical component of SHM that targets to identify the parameters of the structural model [ 17 ].…”

“…Concrete bridges are generally constructed in open areas and exposed to the environment, and the structural temperature fields are heavily affected by the energy exchanged between bridge structures and surrounding environments [ 1 , 2 ]. For concrete bridge structures with low conductivity of concrete material, which are sensitive to thermal loads, the uneven distribution and fluctuation of structural temperature cause undesirable deformations and stresses [ 3 , 4 ], leading to variation of the entire structure’s static and dynamic properties [ 5 , 6 ].…”
