Cerebrospinal fluid neuroplasticity-associated protein levels in patients with psychiatric disorders: a multiplex immunoassay study

Abstract: To examine the role of neuroplasticity in the pathology of psychiatric disorders, we measured cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neuroplasticity-associated protein levels. Participants were 94 patients with schizophrenia, 68 with bipolar disorder (BD), 104 with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 118 healthy controls, matched for age, sex, and ethnicity (Japanese). A multiplex immunoassay (22-plex assay) was performed to measure CSF neuroplasticity-associated protein levels. Among 22 proteins, 11 were successfully mea… Show more

“…Emerging evidence highlights the role of immune response as a key factor in MDs. Immunological biomarkers seem to be related to illness progression and to treatment effectiveness; several studies suggest strong associations among IL-6, TNFa, S100b, IL 1b, and PCR with affective or schizophrenic disorders [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Yuan et al (2019) evaluated the meta-analysis considering inflammatory markers in mental disorders.…”

“…At present, there are few studies on the relationship between plasma NrCAM and MDD, mainly focusing on CSF. The reason is that CSF is the optimal biological material for examination of molecular status, and has been reported to well reflect the state of the central nervous system (31)(32)(33). Many active substances, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, and reactive oxygen species (ROS), are closely related to the destruction of the integrity of the bloodbrain barrier (BBB), and these substances are also important members of the pathogenesis of MDD (34).…”

“…Of note, GDNF may also play a role in epilepsy-induced neuropsychiatric compilations. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder was examined ( Hidese et al, 2020 ). Concentrations of GDNF and CSF amyloid precursor protein (APP) were substantially reduced in schizophrenic patients ( Hidese et al, 2020 ).…”
