“…The latter form is found in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). 5 Previous studies have suggested that NCAM and sNCAM participate in cell adhesion, cell guidance, synaptic plasticity, 6,7 nerve growth, 8 and myelin formation and reformation. 9,10 Similar observations have also been made in MS 11 A number of studies have shown lower levels of sNCAM in MS patients than in healthy controls (HC).…”

“…Among inflammatory biomarkers only N-CAM was investigated more than once. Thus, N-CAM levels were increased in a small older study with uneven gender distribution (19) and decreased in a large, recent, age and gender-matched study (25). Highly statistically significant differences were found, but not replicated regarding interleukin (IL)1β, IL6 (21), IL8 (22), monocytes chemoattractant protein 1 (23) and, chittinase-3-like protein 1 (23).…”

“…In case control studies it is obviously important that the segregation of the groups is strict in order to avoid systematic errors. Diagnosis of bipolar disorder was thorough across the studies: DSM III (19,24,30), DSM IV (4,5,15,18,(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)28,30,32,33,35,37,41,42), specified by Research Diagnostic Criteria (44) (13,16,26,(29)(30)(31)34,36,38,40,43). Besides information on BD, demographical information, other clinical parameters as duration of illness, duration of current affective state, smoking have been reported in newer studies and may influence findings.…”

“…NCAM-knockout mice display an abnormal brain structure as well as learning and behavioral abnormalities (Brandewiede et al, 2014;Bukalo et al, 2004;Stork et al, 1999;Wood et al, 1998). Moreover, single nucleotide polymorphisms in the NCAM gene and/or abnormal polysialylation or proteolysis of NCAM protein alter NCAM function in neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric, and neurodegenerative disorders in humans (Brennaman and Maness, 2010;Hidese et al, 2017;Purcell et al, 2001;Wang et al, 2012), suggesting a crucial role of NCAM in cortical development. NCAM plays a role in regulation of neurogenesis.…”
