Cefaclor in Treatment of Otitis Media and Pharyngitis in Children

Abstract: \s=b\The safety and efficacy of cefaclor were compared with amoxicillin trihydrate in the treatment of 130 cases of otitis media, and with penicillin V potassium in 88 cases of streptococcal pharyngitis in two single-blind controlled studies. Patients with otitis media received approximately 40 mg/kg/day of cefaclor or amoxicillin trihydrate for ten days to three weeks; patients with pharyngitis received 20 mg/kg/day of cefaclor or penicillin V potassium for ten days. Overall, patients who received cefaclor fo… Show more

“…Furthermore, no significant difference in bacteriologic response rates was found between the isolates for which cefaclor MICs were low (0.38 to 1.0 g/ml) and those for which MICs were higher (1.5 to 3.0 g/ml). The high rate of persistence of H. influenzae in middle-ear fluid after 3 to 4 days of treatment with cefaclor is consistent with the rate reported in other studies (24,34,37): cefaclor had a lower bacteriologic eradication success rate than cefuroxime axetil (14,27), amoxicillin-clavulanate (34,41), cefixime (25,40), and ceftriaxone (27,32).…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…There were also no significant differences in the pooled clinical failure rate differences at 3 to 7 days from 4 studies 39,46,49,61 and at 5 to 21 days from 5 studies 39,46,49,56,61 comparing cefaclor with amoxicillin.…”

“…Rash and diffuse pruritus were the most common findings. In 1980, McLinn 5 reviewed the efficacy of cefaclor in the treatment of otitis media and noted no serious adverse reactions, except for one case of vascular purpura. This occurred during the sixth day of treatment of a 5-yearold boy with otitis media, who was taking cefaclor, 250 mg, three times a day.…”
