“…In this group of patients with stable CD38 expression, disease progression and relapse after a firstline chemotherapy did not modify this parameter. These results are in line with others (Damle et al, 1999;D'Arena et al, 2002;Ghia et al, 2003;Thornton et al, 2004), who reported the stability of CD38 expression during the course of the disease in 94-100% of CLL patients. Taken together, the results of this study, carried out on a large series of accurately defined CLL cases, studied on fresh material at presentation, indicate that CD38 is expressed in a relatively small proportion of patients, that the presence of ‡7% CD38 + CLL lymphocytes is already associated with bad prognostic parameters, as male sex, advanced Rai stage, lower Hb concentration, platelet count and higher lymphocyte count.…”

“…In our laboratory (Kipps) we have found that the expression of CD38 is stable (36). Our investigation of 10 patient samples over a period of 4 years confirms previous analyses that CD38 expression is stable over time (8,10,(13)(14)(15)31,35,37 Appendix B).…”

“…The expression of CD38 expression has been shown to be unstable over time in some patients and not in others (8)(9)(10)12,14,(29)(30)(31)(32)(33)(34) and there has been disagreement about which cutoff value to use for CD38 positivity for defining prognosis. Some investigators have used 7% (14,15,18,28), others 20% (10,13), and still others 30% (8,9,11,12,31). Thornton et al and Ghia et al reported that CD38 expression did not change over an interval of greater than 8 years (15,32,35).…”

“…9,13,32,34 Since our proposal is to use CD69 for prognostic purposes, we confirmed its inter-laboratory reproducibility and the stability over time of its expression. 21,35 We demonstrated that CD69 expression was significantly correlated with CD38, CD49d and ZAP-70 and IGHV mutational status. CD69 that is up-regulated rapidly with cellular activation resembling B cells at an earlier state of activation, might be able to transduce BCR-mediated signals better with the help of simultaneous ZAP-70 expres-CD69 expression in CLL haematologica | 2012; 97 (2) 283 …”
