Causes and Phenotypes of Work-Related Asthma

Abstract: Work-related asthma (WRA) includes heterogeneous conditions, which have in common (i) symptoms and signs compatible with asthma and (ii) a relationship with exposures in the workplace. The types of WRA described in this review are distinguished by their etiology, comprising of work-exacerbated asthma (WEA), irritant-induced asthma (IIA), and immunologic occupational asthma (OA). There have been significant advances in the definition and characterization of the different forms of WRA by international panels of … Show more

“…They can be categorized as sensitizers (e.g., flours, latex, diisocyanates) and irritants [4][5][6]. According to the causative substance and the pathogenic mechanism, occupational asthma is classified as sensitizer-induced asthma or irritant-induced asthma [4,7,8]. The first type involves an immunologic mechanism and appears after a latency period [8].…”

“…According to the causative substance and the pathogenic mechanism, occupational asthma is classified as sensitizer-induced asthma or irritant-induced asthma [4,7,8]. The first type involves an immunologic mechanism and appears after a latency period [8]. The second type corresponds to asthma caused by non-immunological irritant mechanisms, which have not been precisely identified yet.…”

“…2 Work-related asthma (WRA) covers conditions having symptoms and signs compatible with asthma and a relationship with exposures in the workplace. 3 It encompasses subtypes of sensitizer-and irritant-induced occupational asthma and work-exacerbated asthma. 4,5 Diagnostic tests aim to identify these WRA subtypes, but in practice doing so can be difficult.…”
