As a result, the reaction of the absorbed SO 2 with epoxides performed smoothly under mild conditions without utilization of any solvents or additives to afford the 5-membered cyclic sulfites (Scheme ), − which have been widely used as monomers for use in ring-opening polymerization reactions, solvents, and electrolyte additives. − From the viewpoint of green chemistry and economic perspectives, synthesis of cyclic sulfites through the cycloaddition procedure utilizing the absorbed SO 2 as a feedstock could be more attractive in comparison with the general procedure through the stoichiometric reaction of 1,2-diol and thionyl chloride in the presence of an organic base (e.g., triethylamine or pyridine), which generates stoichiometric amounts of salts as waste and chlorine-containing impurities. − In this way, SO 2 in flue gas was eventually converted to valuable chemicals and the absorbents were recycled for the next run.…”
