Cation Exchange Capacity of Dominant Soil Types in the Republic of Croatia

Abstract: The study was conducted on 18 locations and 11 dominant soil types in the Republic of Croatia including their evolution-genetic horizons. In total, 51 soil samples were examined. Analysis of soil was done by saturating patterns using barium chloride solution in three replications. Descriptive statistics of the analyzed data was conducted. Basic statistical parameters were calculated, and functional dependence between the base saturation (V%) of analyzed soil samples and their pH was observed. The correlation c… Show more

“…A characteristic feature of carbonate-rich soils was high base saturation and especially large shares of Ca 2+ cations (Zasoñski 1992(Zasoñski , 1993Caravaca et al 1999, Jonczak 2010, Tomašiae et al 2013. The large content of Ca 2+ cations was related with abundance of CaCO 3 in parent material.…”

“…). CEC has a positive correlation with soil pH, soil texture and SOM (Tomašić et al, 2013). The high organic matter and clay can determine the CEC because of negative charge inside both of colloid surface, so it can pull and hold back the cations.…”

“…The indicators are part of a minimum data set. Base saturation determines the base cations which can be exchangeable like Ca , and K + (Tomašić et al, 2013). Soil pH determination will follow the determination of base saturation.…”

“…The lowest and highestCEC values (6.58 and 62.56 cmol (+) /kg soil),respectively were recorded for the surface layer of soil profiles 9 and 13, respectively. High contents of both organic matter and clay result in high values of CEC.This soil components have a large number of negative sites on their surfaces which retain cations (Tomašić et al, 2013). Negative sites on soil colloids are also produced due to high pH dependent charges resulting in high CEC values (Bohn et al, 2001).…”
