“…A severe regenerative haemolytic anemia and moderate to severe thrombocytopenia are common findings among dogs infected with the B. microti -like piroplasm [60,61]. In the present report, the three dogs had regenerative anaemia, based on reticulocyte count (performed only for the bitch), presence of polychromasia, anisocytosis and nucleated RBC.…”

“…currently known to cause disease in domestic dogs is the B. microti-like, T. annae (Zahler et al, 2000;Guitián et al, 2003;Camacho et al, 2004;Camacho Garcia, 2006), which has only been reported to occur in Spain. T. annae has been reported to cause a disease characterized by apathy, fever, and anaemia (Zahler et al, 2000).…”

“…Although Goethert and Telford (2003) did not propose the name B. annae, they questioned the use of Theileria as a genus name since no evidence was presented by Zahler et al (2000) for a preerythrocytic or lymphocyte-infecting stage, nor was there any evidence for the absence of transovarial transmission in ticks (Goethert and Telford, 2003). The provisional assignment to the genus Theileria reflects a controversial argument by some parasitologists working with piroplasms that the small Babesia should be removed from the genus Babesia (Guitián et al, 2003). In the context of our report we will, therefore, refer to the said parasite as T. annae.…”

“…In dogs, it was traditionally assumed that the only Babesia species causing disease were Babesia canis and Babesia gibsoni, but recently published reports (1,5,7) demonstrate that a different (Babesia microti-like) piroplasm can parasitize dogs.…”

“…In an extensive series of case studies from Galicia, Spain (1,5), the agent was also definitively identified by molecular phylogenetic methods as the B. microti-like parasite. Analysis of the rDNA sequences indicates that the Spanish isolate is closely related, but not identical, to the reference B. microti strains isolated in Japan and the United States.…”
