The essential oils (EOs) of green seeds from Daucus carota subsp. maximus growing wild in Pantelleria Island (Sicily, Italy) were characterized. EOs were extracted by steam distillation, examined for their inhibitory properties against food-borne Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and analyzed for the chemical composition by gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). Undiluted EOs showed a large inhibition spectrum against Grampositive strains and also vs. Acinetobacter spp. and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) was in the range 1.25 -2.50 ll/ml for the most sensitive strains. The chemical analysis indicated that D. carota subsp. maximus EOs included 34 compounds (five monoterpene hydrocarbons, six oxygenated monoterpenes, 14 sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, four oxygenated sesquiterpenes, camphorene and four other compounds), accounting for 95.48% of the total oil, and that the major chemicals were carotol, b-bisabolene, and isoelemicin.

Natural Terpenes Influence the Activity of Antibiotics against Isolated Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Objective: In this study, we aimed to describe the influence of natural terpenes on the antimycobacterial activity of first-line tuberculostatic drugs against isolated Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Materials and Methods: The natural terpenes used in this study were R-limonene, S-limonene, myrcene, sabinene, α-pinene, and β-elemene. The values of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for these terpenes, as well as for combinations of terpenes with tuberculostatic antibiotics (ethambutol, isoniazid, and rifampicin), were determined using a tube log₂ dilution method in the range of 125-0.059 µg/mL. Results:S-limonene had a strong synergistic effect with all tested antibiotics (MIC decreased from 16 to 0.475 µg/mL for ethambutol, from 16 to 0.237 µg/mL for rifampicin, and from 32 to 0.475 µg/mL for isoniazid). Combinations of myrcene, R-limonene, β-elemene, and sabinene with tuberculostatic antibiotics resulted in a decreased MIC of the antibiotics (from 3.9 to 0.475 µg/mL for ethambutol, from 15 to 0.475 µg/mL for isoniazid, and from 0.475 to 0.237 µg/mL for rifampicin) while combinations of α-pinene with ethambutol and isoniazid resulted in increased MIC values (from 16 to 125 µg/mL for ethambutol, and from 32 to 125 µg/mL for isoniazid). Rifampicin had a synergistic increase in activity with all the tested compounds. Conclusions: Our study showed that terpenes enhance the activity of tuberculostatic antibiotics.

Cotula cinerea is a traditional Algerian medicinal plant that has many biological properties, such as analgesic, antiseptic and antibacterial activities. Essential oil of Cotula cinerea was subjected to chromatographical and spectroscopical studies to determine the chemical composition. The analysis highlighted that the oil contains trans thujone (51.86%), santalina triéne (10.6%), α-pinéne (2.02%), sabinene (6.17%), cineole <1.8> (5.34%), δ-terpinene (1.57%), camphor (2.63%), β-terpineol (1.39 %) and terpin-4-ol (1.73%) as the major constituents. The essential oil was tested for antibacterial activity. The oil exhibited substantial antibacterial activity against both the tested Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. In search of better anticancer agent the essential oil of Cotula cinerea was also subjected for in-vitro cytotoxic activity on two cancerous human cell lines; colon (HCT116) and hepatic (HePG2) cancer cell lines. The results indicates that the essential oil of Cotula cinerea has a significant cytotoxic activity on the tested colon cancer cell lines with a 66.9% inhibition and a minimal inhibition (33.9%) on liver cancer cell line.
