Carrier-Based Discontinuous PWM Method for Five-Leg Inverter

Abstract: This paper proposes a rotation carrier-based discontinuous pulse width modulation (CB-DPWM) method for the five-leg inverter (FLI). The FLI based on two-level topology consists of 10 switching devices for driving dual motors. Therefore, two switching devices can be reduced to compare the configuration using two three-leg inverters for driving dual motors. The proposed pulse width modulation (PWM) method is based on the reference signals which are used in existing carrier-based continuous pulse width modulation… Show more

“…The existing modulations are the carrier-based PWM (CPWM) and space vector modulation (SVM), and both methodologies can generate the voltage vectors needed by the two connected parts. 8 Based on CPWM and conventional controllers, the FLC has been proposed for grid-connected doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). 9 This scheme has been modified for single-phase grid connection, 10 but it uses an additional rotor power converter.…”

“…The required features can be achieved using an appropriate pulse‐width modulation (PWM). The existing modulations are the carrier‐based PWM (CPWM) and space vector modulation (SVM), and both methodologies can generate the voltage vectors needed by the two connected parts 8 . Based on CPWM and conventional controllers, the FLC has been proposed for grid‐connected doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) 9 .…”

“…A generalized PWM is reported in Dujic et al, 33 which is being frequently used in the literature 34,35 . A modified version of that generalized PWM is presented in Lee et al 36 A five‐leg‐based dual‐output indirect matrix converter (IMC) is presented in Nguyen and Lee 37 and Hamouda et al 38 for supplying two three‐phase loads from a single three‐phase source, where a SVM in the rectifier stage, a carrier‐based PWM, and a digital scalar modulation scheme (DSPWM) in the inverter stage are utilized. Although the presented PWM methods guarantee the loads' autonomous control with a virtual DC link, they cannot be extended for using in applications with a real DC link.…”
