“…This is supported by a low rate of current smoking, a mean SCORE risk of 3.6%, and a high proportion of diagnosed and treated hypertension at study inclusion. Furthermore, the low prevalence of high‐grade stenosis in our study corresponds with previous studies,4, 15, 16, 27 suggesting a similar rather than a greater atherosclerotic burden. Despite this, our results showed the presence of plaque in 9 of 10 participants.…”

“…Plaque burden increases with age 15, 16, 17. In previous studies, the prevalence of carotid plaques has varied significantly,3, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 ranging from 25% to 93%.…”

“…Predicted LV mass was calculated using the formula described by de Simone et al 1 Carotid artery ultrasound Intima-media thickness (IMT) and the lumen diameter of the common carotid arteries were measured by ultrasound using the ACUSON 128XP/10c (Acuson Corporation, CA, USA) and a linear 7 MHz transducer. IMT of the right and left common carotid artery was measured in the 1 cm segment proximal to the dilation of the carotid bulb as described by Howard et al 13 The longitudinal Bmode image was accepted as valid when a double line representing lumen-intima and media-adventitia interfaces was visualized in the longest possible segment of both near and far walls. At end-diastole, IMT of the far walls of the left as well as of the right common carotid artery were measured at 10 points 1 mm apart using the leading-edge convention, and the mean value was calculated.…”

“…8 CAIMT was measured bilaterally by ultrasonography at three locations in the common and internal carotid arteries. 9 Cross-sectional data on total daily sodium intake, excluding that from salt added during preparation or eating, was estimated from responses to the EPIC food frequency questionnaire. 10 Additional questions on the frequency (always, usually, sometimes, rarely, never) of addition of salt during preparation and at the table and the use of medications were also asked.…”
