Cardiovascular risk factors in hypopituitary GH-deficient adults

Abstract: Design: Data on lipids, body composition, and blood pressure (BP) from all published KIMS papers are summarized and compared with a literature review. Results: KIMS data confirm and extend previous research showing that adults with GH deficiency (GHD) have an adverse cardiovascular risk profile. GHD patients have high levels of dyslipidemia, elevated body mass index, unfavorable waist-to-hip ratio and body composition, and a high risk of hypertension. These abnormalities are likely to explain the increased car… Show more

“…We observe an improvement in lipid profile over time only in GHD patients who receive GHRT during adulthood (group 1), which is in agreement with previously published studies (26,27,28). We did not find a difference in lipid profile according to IGF1 SDS values.…”

“…In contrast, the clinical presentation of adult GHD, which is characterized by components of the metabolic syndrome, is apparently never accompanied by hypoglycemia (7). Moreover, the first clinical studies pointed toward an impaired carbohydrate metabolism, because an increased prevalence of impaired glucose tolerance was found in 14 out of 40 adult GHD patients (8).…”

“…Although existing evidence is confounded by simultaneous deficiencies of other pituitary hormones and the variability in their replacement, GH deficiency (GHD) is considered to play a certain role since it is characterized by an adverse profile in cardiovascular risk factors (7,8).…”
