Cardiovascular Disease: A Target for the Pharmacological Effects of Quercetin

Abstract: Quercetin, a prominent dietary antioxidant present in vegetables, especially onions, fruits, highlighting apples and berries, wine and tea, belongs to a group of plant derived heterocyclic polyphenols. These compounds could be important mediators of the biological actions attributed to healthy diets. Chemically, quercetin is a type of flavonoid that specifically belongs to the flavonols group. It naturally occurs either as glycoside or aglycone, both of which have biological activity. Many of the natural sourc… Show more

“…One flavonoid found in plant-based food with potential health benefits is quercetin. Quercetin has been reported to have a role in prevention of diseases such as liver disease [12], pulmonary hypertension [13], and other cardiovascular diseases [14]. Furthermore, quercetin exhibits anti-inflammatory [15], anticancer [16], and antioxidant [17, 18] effects.…”

“…Quercetin appears to have many beneficial effects which include cardiovascular protection, antitumor, antiulcer, antiallergy, antiviral, prevents neurodegenerative disorders, anti-inflammatory activity, prevents diabetic neuropathy, gastro protective effects, antihypertensive, immunity and anti-infective effects. [8][9][10] Effect of quercetin as a food supplement on methotrexate induced toxicity remains unclear. Hence the present study was planned to study an ameliorative effect of quercetin on methotrexate induced toxicity in Sprague-Dawley rats.…”

“…Quercetin has been shown to exert protective effects against cardiovascular diseases like atherosclerosis and ischemia reperfusion-induced injury, as well as anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects [12]. Recent studies have also revealed the neuro-protective effects of quercetin in many neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, and against hypoxiainduced injury and neurotoxic chemical-induced damage [13,14].…”
