Cardiopulmonary exercise testing—a beginner’s guide to the nine-panel plot

Abstract: By reading this article you should be able to:Describe the basic physiology underlying a cardiopulmonary exercise test. Demonstrate a structured approach to evaluating the nine-panel plot of a cardiopulmonary exercise test. Explain the pattern of physiological changes associated with cardiac and respiratory limitation within the nine-panel plot. Show how cardiopulmonary exercise testing can be used to assess patients undergoing major surgery.
