Cardiometabolic risk factors and early indicators of vascular dysfunction: a cross-sectional cohort study in South African adolescents

Abstract: ObjectivesPrevalence of child and adolescents’ overweight and obesity in low- and middle-income countries has increased dramatically. Simultaneously, the incidence of pre-hypertension/hypertension is also increasing in children, which, in turn, predisposes these children to the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in later life. The present study assessed cardiometabolic risk factors and early indicators of vascular dysfunction in adolescents from a low socio-economic rural area in South Africa.DesignCross-sec… Show more

“…Populations in SSA are increasingly facing a double burden of disease involving the interaction between HIV-AIDS and non-communicable diseases such as CVDs [ 9 ]. In general, vascular endothelial function can be regarded as a marker of the net harmful effects of cardiovascular risk factors on the vascular wall [ 10 – 15 ]. HIV-infected patients have premature atherosclerosis [ 16 , 17 ] and increased risk of ischemic heart disease [ 18 ].…”

“…Microvasculature assessment will be done via retinal imaging using a retinal camera (Optomed, Finland) as previously reported [ 40 ]. Blood samples will be collected for the assessment of endothelial function markers [ 41 ], oxidative stress, lipid profile and insulin resistance markers [ 42 ] while urine will be collected for assessment of renal function. Mothers will have one post delivery follow-up for CVD risk assessment.…”

“…Arterial plaque and intima-media reflect the anatomical structure, while stiffness reflects the function of the arteries. All these are subclinical detectors for cardiovascular disease and a good way to predict future cardiovascular events [ 157 , 158 ].…”
