Cardiac Surgery in Germany during 2010: A Report on Behalf of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery

Abstract: All cardiac surgical procedures performed in 79 German cardiac surgical units throughout the year 2010 are presented in this report, based on a voluntary registry which is organized by the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. In 2010 a total of 95 734 cardiac surgical procedures (ICD and pacemaker procedures excluded) have been collected in this registry. More than 12.4 % of the patients were older than 80 years compared to 11.8% in 2009. Hospital mortality in 42 804 isolated CABG procedures… Show more

“…14 Increased acceptance of MIS-MV is probably attributable to a combination of the following factors: improved instruments for surgical access with good visualization of the mitral valve, preservation of the integrity of the osseous thoracic wall, faster patient recovery, very good short-and long-term results with high rates of mitral valve repair, and increasing patient demand. 15 Patient demand is likely to increase as knowledge of percutaneous mitral valve repair methods becomes increasingly widespread, which may lead to more surgeons adopting the MIS-MV technique.…”

“…In the majority of the population, intervention has low risk and is able to promote functional improvement and increase the survival rate when compared to clinical treatment [2.13]. Nevertheless, a progressively larger portion of that population has necessitated the replacement of dysfunctional prosthesis and, consequently, higher operative risk [14].…”

“…Over the last 5 years, the number of patients undergoing the procedure has increased as some patients and clinicians have realised there are potential benefits of minimally invasive surgery (25,(88)(89)(90)(91). This expansion in minimally invasive mitral valve surgery has occurred particularly in Europe and the United States (90, 91), but has been more limited within the UK NHS.…”
