“…The difference in survival for patients with typical and atypical carcinoid tumors has been documented. In one study, the 3-and 5-year survival was 100 and 81%, respectively, for typical tumors, and 96 and 68%, respectively, for atypical tumors (8). Similar findings were also found in another study focusing on the survival of patients with liver metastases; patient survival varied from 16 to 51 months (4).…”

“…Neuroendocrine tumors of the lung are classified into well differentiated, typical and atypical carcinoids and a poorly differentiated subgroup which includes large-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas and small-cell carcinomas; the latter of which are well known for their aggressive behavior (8). According to the WHO classification (2), typical and atypical carcinoids differ in the number of mitoses (<2 per 10 HPF vs. 2-10 per 10 HPF), in nuclear polymorphism which is either absent or present, in the percentage of lymph node metastasis which is either low or high, and in the occurrence of either rare or common metastatic disease, at presentation, respectively.…”

“…In a previous study of bronchial carcinoid tumors, serum tumor marker negative bronchial carcinoid tumors were also reported (17). The levels of serum neuron-specific enolase were normal in 20% of patients and those of serum carcinoembryonic antigen were normal in all patients (17).…”

“…With this in mind, preoperative staging of TC and AC, with specific attention to lymph node status, is very important, especially when treating patients with minimal invasive techniques like EBT, as lymph nodes are not sampled during this technique. With a specificity of 90–93% for the assessment of nodal involvement in patients with bronchial carcinoids, a preoperative CT scan is a reliable tool for excluding lymph node involvement before EBT, and is therefore mandatory in the workup for patients with bronchial carcinoid tumors [13, 27]. In this study we used 2 years as a cutoff point to define successful EBT and experienced a very low total recurrence rate of 5%.…”
