“…In the present study, when the cytotoxicity was compared with metabolites of BITC, BITC itself showed the most profound effects on the bladder epithelium, and the effects reduced nearly in order of its metabolic pathway, suggesting the dependency of the cytotoxicity by the degree of the metabolic modi cation of the BITC. Previous studies indicated that BITC is more carcinogenic than AITC (4,5,11), and direct application of these ITCs in the present study suggested a correlation with the degree of cytotoxicity. Considering the similar cytotoxic effects on rat urinary bladder with oral administration of 0.1% BITC (manuscript in preparation) and the instillation documented here, we can surmise that mercapturic acid conjugates, such as Acetyl-B-Cys for BITC, are generated and cleaved to produce free BITC in the urine, independent of the route of application.…”

“…Allyl isothiocyanate was found to induce hyperplasia in the urinary bladder in 6 of 49 males, and papillomas in 4 of 49 males and 1 of 50 females when given as an intragastric dose of 25 mg/kg body weight 5 times/week for 2 years (Dunnick et al, 1982). Therefore, it is possible that isothiocyanates as a group possess neoplastic potential for the urinary bladder epithelium.…”

“…Sensitive individuals who ingest fava beans develop a severe hemolytic anemia caused by the enzymatic hydrolysis of vicine to its aglycone, divicine, which forms a quinone that generates oxygen radicals (30). 10) Allyl isothiocyanate, a major flavor ingredient in oil of mustard and horseradish, is one of the main toxins of the mustard seed and has been shown to cause chromosome aberrations in hamster cells at low concentration (50) and to be a carcinogen in rats (31). 11) Gossypol is a major toxin in cottonseed and accounts for about 1 percent of its dry weight (32).…”
