Abstract: A 26-year-old man with unresectable inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) presented with multiple metastases in the thoracic vertebra and lymph nodes as detected by positron emission tomography (PET) received chemotherapy with carboplatin plus paclitaxel. After three cycles of chemotherapy, fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET/CT revealed tumor regression and significant reduction of FDG uptake in all lesions. The patient received six cycles of chemotherapy without any severe adverse event, and there wa… Show more

“…Although local recurrence is relatively common (10–25%), metastasis is exceedingly rare in IMT and, as yet, no cases of metastasis have been reported in urinary bladder IMT . Because of the indolent nature of IMT of the urinary bladder, aggressive treatment is probably unwarranted . There is a broad age distribution of IMT, ranging from children to the elderly; a male predominance (2:1–3:1); and painless haematuria is the most common presenting symptom.…”

“…Recently, the idea that IMT represents a reactive process has been contended. IMT has frequently been found to recur and cases of metastatic disease have been reported . Subsequent cytogenetic studies have found a wide range of clonal anomalies in IMT.…”

“…Although the efficacy of this chemotherapy was evaluated in aggressive fibromatosis in cases series (19,20), our experience, including the case reported by Favini et al (10), may provide a treatment choice for patients with unresectable IMT. With regard to other optimal regimens, Kubo et al (12) described the case of an adult IMT patient (aged 26 years) who responded to carboplatin+paclitaxel chemotherapy. As this combination is the most commonly used chemotherapy regimen in various malignancies, carboplatin+paclitaxel may be an optimal choice for adult and inoperable IMT.…”
