We measured accumulation rates of organic carbon (OC) and total nitrogen (TN) and stable carbon (␦ 13 C org ) and nitrogen isotopes (␦ 15 N) in the sediments of two mountain lakes (Lake Ledvica and Lake Planina, northwest Slovenia). Marked variations of these parameters were observed in both sediments. OC accumulation rates ranged from 4 to 23 g m Ϫ2 yr Ϫ1 in Lake Ledvica, whereas in Lake Planina they were one order of magnitude higher and increased substantially in the upper sediments. ␦ 13 C org and ␦ 15N decreased upward in Lake Ledvica, from Ϫ25.5‰ to Ϫ28.4‰, and from ϩ2.1‰ to Ϫ3.4‰, respectively. In contrast, substantial variations in the ␦ 13 C org profile, ranging from Ϫ30.9‰ to Ϫ37.4‰, but a quite uniform ␦ 15

ABSTRACT. Five short cores (top 40-45 cm of sediment) from 4 lakes of the Plitvice Lakes system (Croatia) were measured for 210 Pb, 137 Cs, a 14 C, δ 13 C, and δ 18 O in order to study the influence of environmental changes on the sediment system in small and large lakes. Sediment chronology based on the constant flux (CF) 210 Pb model was the most reliable. Lake sediments consisted mainly of autochthonous carbonates with higher sedimentation rates in small lakes. Sediments from 2 large lakes, ProšÊe and Kozjak, showed constant stable isotope profiles for the carbonate fraction and full agreement between the 137 Cs and 210 Pb chronologies. Sediments from 2 small lakes, Gradinsko and Kaluerovac, showed synchronous increases in 14 C and δ 13 C and disturbed 137 Cs records. All lakes showed an increase in a 14 C in the carbonate sediments above the first occurrence of 137 Cs, which was interpreted as a damped (~10 pMC increase in a 14 C) and decades-delayed consequence of the bombinduced increase in a 14 C in atmospheric CO 2 . For the small lakes, increased δ 13 C in the last 2 decades and part of the a 14 C increase is probably due to an increase in primary productivity, which enhanced biologically induced calcite precipitation with concomitant changes in the carbon isotopic composition of carbonate sediments. δ 13 C values of a near-shore sediment core close to the confluence of one of the tributaries of Lake Kozjak showed that the carbonates in this core are a mixture of autochthonous and eroded allochthonous mineral carbonate. This core had a higher fraction of organic material. The sedimentation rate at this core site was high, but rates could not be quantified by 210 Pb, 137 Cs, or 14 C.

The article describes the results of detailed geological mapping of the wider environs of Planina pri Jezeru north of Bohinj. In the literature the Upper Triassic massive and bedded limestone, Jurassic limestone, Cretaceous clastic rocks and Pleistocene sediments have been reported in this area up to now. The article supplements existing lithostratigraphic information by defining exact locations of the Pleistocene sediments at Planina pri Jezeru and Planina v Lazu, and of Jurassic rocks. In Poljane a Neptunian dyke and bioclastic limestone, while north of Miz~na glava a flat-bedded microsparitic limestone were described for the first time. Correlation to the Triglav Lakes Valley Jurassic beds indicates equivalent facieses. Allochthon Cretaceous biocalcarenite and jasper situated east of Planina pri Jezeru are also described due to their importance for further glaciological studies. The results show that the recent lake Jezero na Planini pri Jezeru is formed due to the accumulation of Pleistocene glacial-lacustrine fine-grained sediment in till, deposited on the Dachstein limestone. Izvle~eklanek podaja rezultate podrobnega geolo{kega kartiranja {ir{e okolice Planine pri Jezeru severno od Bohinja. Na obravnavanem obmo~ju so bili v literaturi doslej opisani zgornje triasni masivni in plastoviti apnenec, jurski apnenec, kredni klastiti in pleistocenski sedimenti. ^lanek dopolnjuje obstoje~e litostratigrafske podatke, saj so v njem predstavljene natan~ne lokacije pleistocenskih sedimentov na Planini pri Jezeru in Planini v Lazu ter jurskih kamnin. Na Poljanah sta prvi~ opisana neptunski dajk in bioklasti~ni apnenec, severno od Miz~ne glave pa plo{~asti mikrosparitni apnenec. Primerjava z jurskimi plastmi v Dolini Triglavskih jezer kaže na sorodne faciese. Vzhodno od Planine pri Jezeru sta zaradi pomena za prihodnje raziskave poledenitev v Julijskih Alpah opisana alohtona kredni biokalkarenit in jaspis. Iz omenjenih rezultatov izhaja, da je recentno Jezero na Planini pri Jezeru posledica prisotnosti pleistocenskih ledeni{ko-jezerskih drobnozrnatih sedimentov v tilu, odloženem na Dachsteinskem apnencu.
