WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS This experimental animal study shows that photodynamic therapy (PDT) of telangiectasia significantly reduces the treated vein length and area temperature without causing severe histological damage, such as necrosis or ulceration. These preliminary findings should stimulate further tests using this new approach for the treatment of telangiectasia. Objectives: Telangiectasia is a common venous formation that mainly affects women and causes discomfort, including psychological distress. This study compared photodynamic therapy (PDT) with glucose for vessel sclerosis in a rabbit ear model. Methods: Thirty-six ears of 18 rabbits were randomly divided into four groups: Group 1: only injection of Photogem (4 mg/mL); Group 2: only light (635 nm, 100 mW/cm 2 , 8 min, 48 J/cm 2); Group 3: glucose 75% injection; Group 4: PDT procedure with injection of Photogem and illumination immediately after. Injections were made into the central ear artery. After injection or sham procedures, manual compression of the marginal vein was maintained for 8 min in all ears. Follow up was immediately after the procedures, and one and six days later. The percentage of length reduction of spider veins, the target vessels, was analysed in digital photographs with Image J software. Ear thermographs were made with a thermocamera device and average temperatures were collected for analysis. Ear biopsies were obtained after six days. Endothelium average, inflammation, fibrosis, necrosis, skin burn, and vascular thrombosis were assessed using a specific score. Results: The mean vessel length reduction was 26% for Group 4, 2.4% for Group 3, .4% for Group 1, and 0 for Group 2, highlighting that in Group 4, the vessel lengths were significantly reduced compared with the other groups (p < .001). In the thermal analysis, in Group 3, the temperature was unchanged from the initial temperature and the central diameter vessel increased after six days, while, in Group 4, the temperature decreased and the vessels were not clearly detected, suggesting a reduction of the vessels and smaller infusion. Histology showed no difference among groups and one case of necrosis was found in Group 4. Conclusions: PDT was associated with significantly more target vessel sclerosis than glucose injection and controls.

Collagen (Coll) is the most common protein in the extracellular matrix, responsible for providing tissue structure and support. In some types of cancer, including prostate cancer (PC) abundant collagen was identified and related to tumor progression and metastasis. This study aimed to investigate Coll-I, III, IV and elastin in normal canine prostatic tissue and PC, using the Picrosirius red (PSR) and Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis. Eight normal prostates and 10 PC from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples were used. Collagen fibers area was analyzed with ImageJ software. The distribution of Coll-I and Col-III was approximately 80% around prostatic ducts and acini, 15% among smooth muscle and 5% around in blood vessels, in both normal prostate and PC. Immunostaining for type IV collagen was observed in the basal membrane of prostate acini, smooth muscle, blood vessels, and never fibers of normal and PC samples. Elastic fibers were found in the septa dividing the lobules and around the prostatic acini of normal samples. A high amount of elastic fibers was observed around the ducts and the urethra in normal and canine PC. The distribution and area percentage of staining for collagen are similar in normal and neoplastic canine prostate when analyzed with PSR and IHC.

Em dermatologia veterinária, persiste a tradição morfológica de obtenção de dados essencialmente qualitativos. A estereologia e a microscopia de força atômica são técnicas que combinam estatística e microscopia avançada para obter informações quantitativas tridimensionais, como volume total, volume ultraestrutural, densidade volumétrica, número total de estruturas, dentre outras, a partir de imagens bidimensionais. Essas técnicas são cada vez mais relevantes para determinar a heterogeneidade morfológica comumente encontrada em amostras teciduais. A utilização concomitante dessas técnicas favorece a obtenção de dados matemáticos e físicos, os quais são mais fidedignos e de maior acurácia que dados morfológicos qualitativos, baseados em descrições morfométricas bidimensionais. Este trabalho consiste de uma pesquisa de natureza descritiva, na modalidade de pesquisa bibliográfica, a respeito do uso das técnicas de delineamento estereológico e microscopia de força atômica. Para tanto, foram selecionados artigos em inglês e português, de 2003 a 2019, a partir de bases de dados online (PUBMED, SCIELO). A estereologia e microscopias avançadas, como a microscopia de força atômica, são altamente relevantes pela capacidade de fornecimento de dados sofisticados e fidedignos na área de interesse, tornando úteis para práticas morfodescritivas veterinárias.
