Abstract-Today's cellular networks (3G/4G) do not scale well in heterogeneous networks (HetNets) of multiple technologies that employ network-centric (NC) model. This destabilization is due to the need for coordination and management of multiple layers of the HetNets that the NC models cannot provide. User-centric (UC) approach is one of the key enablers of 5G wireless cellular networks for rapid recovering from network failures and ensuring certain communication capability for the users. In this paper, we present resource-aware energy-saving technique based on the UC model for LTE-A HetNets. We formulate an optimization problem for UC as a mixed linear integer programming (MILP) that minimizes the total power consumption (Energy Efficiency) while respecting the data rate per user and propose a low complexity iterative algorithm to user terminal (UE)-eNodeB association. In UC model, UE possessing terminal intelligence can establish the transmission and reception with different cells within the LTE-A HetNet assuming the existence of coordination between the different cells in the network. The performance is evaluated in terms of energy saving in the uplink and downlink and the added capacity to the network (data rate). The evaluation is carried out by comparing a UC model against a NC model with the same simulation setup. The results show significant percentage of energy saving at eNodeBs and UEs in a UC model. Also, system capacity is enhanced in the UC model in both the uplink and downlink due to utilizing best channel gain for transmission and reception.

Softwarization and Optimization for Sustainable Future Mobile Networks: A Survey

Abstract--Due to the tremendous growth in mobile data traffic, cellular networks are witnessing architectural evolutions. Future cellular networks are expected to be extremely dense and complex systems, supporting a high variety of end-devices (e.g., smartphone, sensors, machines) with very diverse QoS requirements. S uch amount of network and end-user devices will consume a high percentage of electricity from the power grid to operate, thus increasing the carbon footprint and the operational expenditures of mobile operators. Therefore, environmental and economical sustainability have been included in the roadmap towards a proper design of the next-generation cellular system. This paper focuses on softwarization paradigm, energy harvesting technologies and optimization tools as enablers of future cellular networks for achieving diverse system requirements, including energy saving. The paper surveys the state-of-the-art literatures embedding softwarization paradigm in densely deployed Radio Access Network (RAN). In addition, the need for energy harvesting technologies in densified RAN is provided with the review of the state-of-the-art proposals on the interaction between softwarization and e nergy harvesting technology. Moreover, the role of optimization tools, such as machine learning, in future RAN with densification paradigm is stated. We have classified available literature that balances these three pillars namely, softwarization, energy harvesting and optimization with densification, being a common RAN deployment trend. Open issues that require further research efforts are also included.

Inter-cell interference leads to severe performance degradation in cellular networks, and the study of multi-user interference channel is the corner stone for solving this problem. Amplitude-space layered interference alignment (IA), as an effective complementation to the vector-space IA, is a promising method to increase the data rate in static interference channels. However, recent studies of layered IA has been focused on analyzing the degrees of freedom (DoF) or the achievable rate under specific channel constraints. In this paper, we propose a layered IA scheme that can work with arbitrary channel coefficients. We develop a layer partitioning method and optimize the active layer assignment through linear programming. An implementation scheme is then introduced with multi-level nested lattice codes where the signal and interference are nested in amplitude space, and the interference from different users is nestedly aligned. The performance of the proposed scheme is finally evaluated in homogeneous and heterogeneous cellular networks with practical settings.
