Abstract: Inflammation Biomarkers Capacity in predicting the Metabolic Syndrome. The inflammatory process is the link between metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. To measure the degree of subclinical inflammation some inflammatory biomarkers have been considered. This work reviews the recent researches of the associations between inflammatory biomarkers and metabolic syndrome, as well as the capacity in predicting the metabolic syndrome. These biomarkers include pro-inflammatory cytokines, anti-inflammatory c… Show more

“…Studies have shown that this protein can have important pro-inflammatory effects and, when it binds with molecules produced during inflammation or infection, it triggers activation of the complement, leading to tissue damage. [19][20][21] Published data show that there is a strong correlation between high CRP levels and overweight or obesity. Overweight/obesity in children also affects the presence of hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, elevated CRP levels and the risk of MS, conferring a risk of future comorbidities.…”

“…Notwithstanding, certain limitations should be taken into account, since serum CRP levels can increase transitorily for 2 to 3 weeks after severe infections, traumas or acute ischemic events. 6,20,22,23,31 Testing CRP can even be important for adults with Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL-c) results that are not a cause for concern and the result is predictive of whether or not statins should be prescribed. This indication is based on the recommendations of the JUPITER study (Justification for the Use of Statins in Prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin), which demonstrated possible beneficial effects of these drugs in apparently healthy people who have LDL-c < 130mg/dL and CRP levels over 2 mg/dL.…”

“…Interestingly, many of these molecules have been implicated previously in patients with auto-immune 37,38 or metabolic diseases 39 . Further study of these pathways may result in important breakthroughs in schizophrenia research as this could lead to a means of stratifying patients prior to treatment.…”

“…Stimulation of endothelial cells can provoke expression of inflammatory receptors, as seen in Table 1. 21,22 This protein also acts on bacteria and other pathogenic agents, binding to phosphocholine, thereby facilitating macrophagic phagocytosis. The complement system is responsible for the inflammatory process that breaks down cells and pathogens, destroying cell membranes by depositing proteins called opsonins.…”
