CandidatusLiberibacter americanus induces significant reprogramming of the transcriptome of the susceptible citrus genotype

Abstract: BackgroundCitrus huanglongbing (HLB) disease is caused by endogenous, phloem-restricted, Gram negative, uncultured bacteria named Candidatus Liberibacter africanus (CaLaf), Ca. L. asiaticus (CaLas), and Ca. L. americanus (CaLam), depending on the continent where the bacteria were first detected. The Asian citrus psyllid vector, Diaphorina citri, transmits CaLas and CaLam and both Liberibacter species are present in Brazil. Several studies of the transcriptional response of citrus plants manifesting HLB symptom… Show more

“…Moreover, studies at the genomic level have been ascertained that HLB can alter the expression of a large number of genes in various organs of infected plants (Kim et al, 2009;Liao and Burns, 2012;Mafra et al, 2013;Zheng and Zhao, 2013;Aritua et al, 2013;Zhong et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2016). Some genes are overexpressed, but others reduce its expression.…”

“…The superbug phenomenon may already be approaching this level in the area of citrus trees, as illustrated by the following quotes from the popular press concerning citrus greening disease (a disease caused by Candidatus Liberibacter americanus): 27 "If we don't find a cure soon, we won't be growing oranges in Florida much longer." "The future of the citrus industry is at stake."…”
